French minister for the armed forces Florence Parly has announced that France’s carrier strike group will soon deploy to the Eastern Mediterranean and Indian Ocean as part of operation Chammal (Paris’ contribution to Inherent Resolve).

France is currently fielding 900 military personnel in the region, with the stated aims of supporting coalition forces against ISIS (through airstrikes and training) and advising the Iraqi armed forces.

It’s […] easy for observers to see this as an opportunity for Paris to bolster their presence in the region

Parly said that this deployment, expected to start in the first semester of 2021, shows France’s long-term commitment to the fight against terrorism, but it’s also easy for observers to see this as an opportunity for Paris to bolster their presence in the region in view of recent posturing by Turkey.

While Ankara has turned its rhetoric down a notch in recent times, the Eastern Mediterranean is clearly bound to become an increasingly crowded space.
