New UK Carrier to Sail Through the Mediterranean

HMS Queen Elizabeth, one of the UK’s new British aircraft carriers, is set to sail through the Mediterranean later this year, carrying 24 F-35B jets, the UK Defence Journal reports. Leading the British Carrier Strike Group, she will deploy to the Pacific Ocean along with two Type 45 destroyers, two Type 23 frigates, a nuclear submarine, a tanker and a logistics ship.

The South China Sea is the most likely destination for the Strike Group, given that in 2018 Prime Minister Boris Johnson had revealed to Australian ministers that the Queen Elizabeth would conduct freedom of navigation patrols in the region on her maiden voyage.
